Quick! 3 Time Management Tips

Three simple ways to use your time more effectively.

1. Schedule it — If a task or event doesn’t make it onto my calendar, it doesn’t happen. Make sure you have an effective calendar system. I love Google’s option because it allows me to plan my day with time-specific and non time-specific tasks. Although counter-intuitive, taking time to plan saves time.

Color coding helps me visualize my day. Orange = personal time-specific, blue = professional time-specific, green = non time-specific

2. Say “no” and prioritize — Whenever I try to schedule too much in a day it’s counterproductive. I can only give some of my energy to each task and end up feeling frazzled. Prioritize and pick your top two to three items for the day. Give them 100% and the rest can wait.

3. Avoid interruptions — I like to take an hour or so each morning (or evening, depending on my schedule) to knock out as many small tasks as possible: emails, phone calls, social media, etc. Grouping quick items allows me to be more effective on the complex to do’s. Avoiding interruptions also goes back to saying “no” to distractions that can wait (Facebook, text messages, etc).
